Opal Varieties & Classification

1. Precious Opal

Naturally bonded to its native ironstone host rock, featuring a thin layer of precious opal with a natural brown rock backing.

4. Crystal Opal / Water Opal

Transparent to translucent opals with a warm brownish-yellow, vibrant orange, or reddish-orange body tone (may or may not exhibit play-of-color).

6. Common Opal

How & Where Opals Form

Opals are formed when low-temperature, silica-rich water seeps into underground rock cavities, fissures, and voids, gradually depositing hydrated silica over millions of years. Opals can also replace organic matter over time, creating rare opalized fossils.

Opals are relatively delicate gemstones and require gentle care to preserve their natural beauty. Clean only by wiping gently with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth.

 Avoid Physical Impact: Remove opal jewelry during heavy activities to prevent scratches, pressure, or hard impacts.

 Avoid Heat & Extreme Dryness: Keep away from high temperatures and dry environments. For long-term storage, place your opal alongside a damp cotton ball or a small dish of distilled water to prevent dehydration and cracking (crazing).

 Avoid Direct Light: Protect from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or intense artificial lighting.

Avoid Chemicals & Soaking: Keep away from harsh chemicals, acids, detergents, perfumes, hairsprays, and cosmetics. Because opal is naturally porous, never submerge it in chemical liquid jewelry cleaners.
